We have had a few trees on our property that have made us a little nervous. Especially the one we call “Big Leany”. He has been hanging over our heads for quite sometime. It had gotten so bad that tree companies kept bombarding us with estimates. Finally we got a really good price to get rid of Big Leany and a few of his drought killed buddies! We are so glad to have this taken care of!

New Home, Bday, and Red Stamp

I discovered from another blog I read about an app called Red Stamp. I love it! I’m sure you will be seeing more posts with it. Since I had an open house party, and Melissa’s Big Bday Bash, I used Red Stamp to make some homemade cards. I liked them.

I’m so thankful we were able to stop by Dawn’s new pad! It was adorable of course.

Then we headed to Bareback to celebrate Melissa’s Big 4-0. It of course was a great time with great friends, dancing the night away.

After messing around with the bank (this was definitely stressful on my normally care free hubby) we finally closed on our refinance. We are so happy! We got a great interest rate and it will save us money every month. And my hard working hubby also got a raise this month as well! This extra money will definitely help us with our adoption!

I had planned on spending the day with mom, enjoying more girlie things like shopping and the new Dolly Parton/Queen Latifa Movie, but instead I was stuck on my day off with the worst stomach bug I’ve had in a long time! It was not a good start.

I felt just well enough to go to work, which has been crazy busy. The upside was Dad and Jeff brought over a couch from Uncle Dave that will be going in our Adoption fundraiser garage sale.

The week has been so stressful. At work I has been the end of the nine weeks, grades due, updates due, and I picked up a case study at work to practice my diagnostician skills. So I’ve been working late nights, and having nightmares about work, and just general STRESS. Plus Thomas has been trying to refinance our mortgage to get a lower interest rate, so he too has been under pressure, and annoyed with the bank.

Dumpster Digging

I proved to one of my dear students how much I love him, by digging in the dumpster at work. It was sooooo nasty! The sweet boy was so apologetic and thankful, you would have thought I donated my kidney to him! So even though it is one of the more disgusting things I’ve done, it kind of made my day, to make his day. If that makes sense.
I’ve been on a roll with the kids at work! I got two Thank you emails from parents saying what a good job I’m doing. (which is nice to hear) and one little girl told me that I had the power of niceness. Which totally cracked me up!

Moments like these make me appreciate what a wonderful job I have!

RODEO SEASON!!!!

Today the concert line up was announced for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. I love rodeo season. Thomas and I have so many great memories there, one of my favorites was our first Valentine’s Day when he took me to see Alan Jackson!

I keep daydreaming about next rodeo season when we will (hopefully) be attending the rodeo with our kiddos. I can’t wait for them to do “rodeo art”, see the animals and cowboys, and play carnival games! It’s an experience I can’t wait to share!

The message at Church really got me thinking about how faith has impacted my journey. How in all things we do we should abide by Christ and do things with him.
When I think about our trails of building a family, I think a lot about unanswered prayers. When you spending the last few years, trying to get pregnant, being pregnant, or miscarrying you spend a lot of time praying.

In the last year I was more than a little “fed” up. Had I been forgotten about? Was I being punished? I know I’m a spoiled brat.

I was driving home after receiving some bad news from the doctor and I was praying. Well I say praying, but I wasn’t doing it like most people, I was M-A-D! I felt like God was pushing me into adoption. And I couldn’t do it. What if we don’t pass the home study? What if we can’t come up with the money? What if we can’t get the time off of work? Am I really going to travel to another country? What if no kids want us as their parents?
God must have mistaken me for some brave rich confident girl some.where.else.

So I was driving and praying and finally screamed “Is this what you want? Fine!”,and then the weirdest thing happened, my mood switched. I went from being red-hot upset, to smiling and peaceful. I called and told Thomas I was ready, and he couldn’t be more thrilled! He had been ready to make the move a long time ago. And wouldn’t you know the things I’ve worried about have fallen into place!
I know adoption isn’t something I’m doing for God, but it is something I couldn’t do without Him.

My alma mater the good ole Sam Houston Bearkats, had an undefeated football season! So Thomas and I went up to a sports bar by our house to catch the game. Unfortunately the Bearkats didn’t take home the title, but I’m still proud of the education I got there at Old SHSU. Veronica (a fellow Sam Houston Alum) met us up there so it was nice to have some girl chat during the game.

Thomas then we headed back to the house and invited Jeff over for some grilling and more football! The food was amazing. I loved my grilled tofu, and the boys thoroughly enjoyed their pork tenderloin. And even better than the food was….

the TEXANS WON!!!!
That made these loyal Texans fans very very very happy! It might have been the perfect Saturday.

I started off the new year by being productive. I cleaned around the house, went to the grocery store and put it away, and put gas in Thomas’ truck. All while he watched the football and played video games.

Monday I went back to work, Thomas and I are trying out a new cleaning system. Where you clean for an hour a day (30 minutes each for us) and you have a company clean house always and no cleaning on the weekend!

After an afternoon of catching up on girly shows with Kristen, I came home to snuggly by the fire with my hubby. It was so nice.

Almost everyday for lunch at work I take a cheeseburger salad! I love it. I use the dressing from the pioneer woman tomatoes I made (oil, balsamic vinegar and a a pinch of brown sugar) a veggie burger, lettuce, and cheese. It is my FAVORITE! Then I saw the Pioneer came up with her own!

When my parents invited us to go downtown to discovery green with them, I was a little nervous at first, but the promise of a amazing photo op got me to go! I was afraid it would be too crowded and crazy, but to my pleasant surprise it was a nice crowd. We were able to find parking, and walking into Discovery Green had lights and music that really gave it a magical feel.

This Christmas was filled with running around! But I enjoyed every moment of it!

First to my parents house.

One of my favorite presents was the Vera Bradley wallet my brother gave me. It was so thoughtful and matched my purse.

Thomas and Jeff got matching sling shots.

My mom got a 22, although Dad said it’s a gift to the family! Oh the irony, my vegetarian mama that wouldn’t hurt a fly. I see some coke cans that are going to meet an untimely demise!

Then we headed over to Grandma Louises house to bring her breakfast and presents. She has a ton of feral cats in her neighborhood that are so pretty.

Then it was off to Grandma Jane’s for our breakfast tradition.

Then my parents house for Christmas Day dinner.

Our church has a really big service with a play and elephants it’s a BIG production, so this year we decided to go to Grandma’s (much smaller) Presbyterian Church. It brought back a lot of memories of my childhood, since that is the church I went to when I was a kid. I liked the smaller church setting and the traditional Christmas music. It was a nice change of pace. Instead of candles this year for silent night they handed out glow sticks. I instantly turn into a five year old when handed a glow stick, so that might have been my favorite part!

I spent the day working at James Avery, but we ended up hosting Christmas Eve Dinner at our house. It was great, Thomas deep cleaned the house while I was at work, and my mom brought over dinner! So I just had to show up.

Thomas and I received notice that we needed to get finger printed that day. Luckily I was off so we made it a little date! The office was by where Thomas used to work. And 12 years ago when we were first dating I would give him a ride to work and pick him up, so we definitely felt nostalgic about the commute. We thought about what young Thomas and Jessica would think about how we turned out. We think they would be pleasantly surprised. LOL.

Getting fingerprinted was mostly like a trip to the DMV. Not as glamorous as I had pictured but still exciting to me to say the least! Every step closer to our kiddos gets us giddy with excitement. We celebrated this little milestone with a lunch date before Thomas had to go back to work.

Thomas and I had a little date to go see Christmas lights in Preston wood. We swung by starbucks for some yummy hot chocolate then we drove around and listened to Christmas music! It was such a Christmas date!

Deli-cious. After I got off work at James Avery I met up with the family at Jason’s Deli.

My friend Susan gave me the recipe for these yummy easy cookies!

Easy Peanut Butter cookies
Pre-heat oven to 350
1 can sweet condensed milk (14 oz)
3/4 cups of peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups bisquick
Sugar
Hershey kisses
-Add can of milk and peanut butter into large mixing bowl and stir until blended.
-Next add vanilla and bisquick-mix all ingedients thoroughly until you have a dough.
-Next roll the dough into one inch balls.
-roll the ball in sugar to coat it.
-bake 6-10 minutes (depending on your oven) or until golden brown on top.
-when removed from oven stick hershey kiss in middle of peanut butter ball.

I love all the quality time I’m spending with my camera, and not only my camera editing software as well. Although it can be stressful, and it’s making my life feel a little, eh hem, boring. Jeff had been dying to see Arthur’s Christmas, since it got a good review on Spill. We were even able to talk my dad into going. So after a lovely dinner at Valley Ranch we headed to the movies. It was empty. I had never seen the Silverado that empty on a Saturday night. We were able to get front row parking! We all (even Dad) LOVED the movie! What a great Christmas treat!

I couldn’t help but feel incredibly thankful this Thanksgiving. There is so much in my life to be thankful about,God has truly blessed more than I deserve. This holiday season I feel so thankful for my home that is filled with love, hope and laughter!
That afternoon we had Thanksgiving at Aunt Lollie’s. Amanda and Rusty couldn’t make it because they were at the last A&M vs UT game. The food was amazing of course and the time with family is always cherished.

Sunday November 20th, 2011 We woke up bright and early and headed over to redo our trip to the Renaissance Festival with Adam and Kayla. This time it went much smoother, there was no traffic, and we got there in 35 minutes.

We handled our I-600A in true Oakes fashion, like a team. I gathered the documents and Thomas got the money orders and mailed it off!

Twist of Events

Thomas and Adam got a great group on for tickets to the Renaissance Festival we were all super excited. That morning we met at our house and headed to there around 10:45. Traffic was HORRIFIC, when we still hadn’t reached our destination by 2 o’clock we decided to turn around and try again next weekend. Starving we ate a delish lunch at Red Robin where they gave me a sundae for my birthday. YUM.

Then to salvage our day and enjoy the amazing weather Kayla had the great idea to go play putt putt.

Even though I stink at putt putt, I managed to get a hole in one, TWICE! That is two more times than anybody else in our group. But I still lost.

This year I was ridiculously pumped about my birthday. First off it was 11-11-11, I mean seriously how cool is that? And it’s on a Friday, which just happens to be my favorite day of the week. Thomas bought me a new iPhone for my birthday, isn’t he the best? My friends and students made my day extra special with cards, baked goods, and ordering lunch together!
Then we had happy hour after work which was great! I loved sitting on the patio.

Then I ended the day at my parents house for dinner with the family. My mom made my favorite Spaghetti Pie. It was an amazing day! I couldn’t stop smiling all day.

I was inspired by my cousins roommate to do a photography challenge. I am going to take a picture every day for the next year. I am hoping that by documenting my last year of my twenties I will become a better photographer, but we shall see! I think this year is going to be quiet the adventure and worth capturing in photos.

We had told our inner circle of family and friends instantly, they had known what we had been through and had been whole heartedly supportive of our journey to adopt. Thomas and I are truly blessed with an AMAZING support system of family and friends.

Telling the rest of the world was a little daunting to me. We had our adoption dream in our little lovely bubble, and I was afraid to expose our dream to the outside elements. People can be insensitive and opinionated. (And, in fairness, I can be hypersensitive.)
And, as with most things, I worried for nothing! The response we have received has been incredibly positive! Which has been such a relief. Although I will say when people find out their reaction is either that we are crazy or saints.

I have been working with a dear friend (and the PE teacher at my school) doing an afterschool club that promotes environmental awareness in children. It has been fun being her assistant and we lucked out with a really good group of kids. We went on a hike at the local park in celebration of our final meeting, the kids loved it! We are so blessed to have such great access to beautiful nature right in our backyard!

We headed to the drive in with our friends Paul and Lindsay. It was chilly out, but I was super snuggly in my big reclining chair with my sleeping bag. The first movie Tower Hiest was decent, but the Big Year (even though it had a ton of recognizable comedians) was not funny at all, so I finally stayed up for the second movie, but we left because it was so dull. Owell! We still had great time!

I just adore her son and his family, they were such great supportive people to work with! He is such an amazing kiddo I miss him.
Thomas got a facebook comment last week about what a kind caring individual he was to help with the widowers and single mother’s oil change! A friend of another manager saw the status and emailed it to T’s store! So sweet.
It’s nice that we both have jobs we love and feel we make a difference!

This was a loooong day. I had a meeting after school until 4:30, then I rushed to be at orientation at James Avery by 5! I think this will be a great job, and I like that one of the first sacrifices I will make as a Mama is my time and earn some money to go towards our adoption!

For the month of October we have also vowed not to go out to dinner. We haven’t graced the doors of a restaurant in 4 weeks! This has been interesting, we normally eat out at least(gulp) 3x a week, it’s taken some adjusting, but it hasn’t been as bad as we thought.
Something else we have sacrificed at the Oakes house is our cable. We have put it on hold for the next few months in order to save money for the adoption.(this will probably be a theme on here…….blah blah blah…to save money for adoption")
So with all this hanging out at home with no cable has provided time for more reading. I recently finished the Hunger Games Series and now Thomas is finishing them. They are AMAZING! Such a quick faced paced read. I can’t wait for the first movie to come out in March.

The first adoption book I’ve read is Adopt Without Debt. This book was endorsed by Dave Ramsey (who I adore, we’ve been to his seminar and have read his other books) and Thomas and I try and live the debt free Dave Ramsey way as much as possible. So I thought this would be a good book to start with, it was filled with good ideas on how to save, earn, and raise money for adoption.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Adoption?We knew we wanted a family, but after many years and tears of trying the old fashion way (click HERE to find out more on that subject),God really opened our heart towards adoption. And we have been so happy and excited since!
Why International?We knew domestic adoption isn’t for us at this time, we really liked the idea of traveling over seas to start our family, coming back home and starting our life together. Thomas and I knew we wanted a family, but weren’t set on a baby. We have known a couple families who have adopted from Eastern Europe and have been very happy with it, so that made it feel more familiar to us.
Why Ukraine?I don’t know how I came across the Ukraine, I just kind of stumbled upon it (definitely God at work), but once I started reading about it the more appealing it became.
My Aunt Beth is half Ukrainian, which makes it nice to have family who shares the same heritage.
You can adopt “independently” which makes the cost cheaper than other programs, because there is no agency fees. Ukraine law forbids agency use so you wouldn’t be able to use one in Ukraine anyway.
Many sibling groups are available. Thomas and I like the idea of adopting a sibling group that way our children will have someone from the same background to take part in our family.
There is a big need in Ukraine. The children there live in orphanages and don’t have the kind of medical care that we have here in America.
My favorite aspect is you choose your children. There is no pre-referral, you travel to Ukraine, look over the files, meet the child and decide if they are a good match for your family.
What agency are you using?We aren’t using an agency, we are using a facilitator Cathy Harris from Ukrainian Angles. She will help us gather documents here in the U.S., then she will provide us with a translator to help us in Ukraine. She has had excellent reviews and has helped more families than any source adopt from Ukraine.
How long will the process take?The process takes about 6-12 months. With Thomas and I spending about 4 weeks in Ukraine. We are thinking right now that we could leave anywhere from February to August but that is a very rough estimate. We are still pretty early in the process and will know more as we progress. I will be keeping track of the timeline HERE.
What is the Cost?I will keep track of what we are spending vs estimated expenses HERE on the cost page. The total is approximately 17,000-24,000 for two children.
How did you families take the news?Our families are ECSTATIC! They couldn’t be more ready to be grandparents! And they are looking forward to our little additions. Thomas and I feel so lucky that we have families love and support on this amazing journey.
Genders, Names, Numbers???At this point these are all unknown. Thomas and I have been talking about names since we started dating, so you can imagine how many we have had and have changed! When we meet the kiddos we will hopefully have a better idea of what their name should be (we may keep their Ukrainian names or give them American names). What we do know is that our home study is approved for 3 siblings under 7 with minor or correctable conditions, but we could come back with one, two, or three. As far as Gender goes, yet another unknown. We do know that boys are MUCH more available for adoption than girls. It is belief in Ukraine that boys are much more likely to get into trouble (gangs, alcoholism, etc..) and that they are less like likely to take care of their family as their parents age. So we are happily anticipating boys, but we have known families who have come home with girls, so yet another unknown.
Will your kids speak English?They will speak Russian/Ukrainian, but we are looking forward to teaching them English!
How can I help?We appreciate all prayers and encouragement!
We will also be holding 3 fundraising events.

Tree leaves, When I heard about adoptive families creating a tree and allowing people to purchase thumbprint leaves for donations, I of course LOVED the idea!!! (being an “Oakes” I’m obsessed with all things trees) So for a small donation you will be able to add a leaf to our tree. This will “leave” us with a great keepsake for our family, showing all the people that wanted them to be here!
Garage Sale this fall, so if you have any old items you would like to donate we would appreciate it!
Dinner this winter, we haven’t decided if we will hold a spaghetti dinner type shindig at our house, or use a local business. More than a fundraiser this will be a good way to celebrate our decision to adopt with the people we love!

The Whole Process.

Here is what we will need to do in order to bring our children home. What we have done has been crossed out.
Step A

Step B
For the Home study, you will need it to mention: Basic information
Legal names, Date of Birth, All members living in the home, Background/Family History on both parents, Education, Religion, Marital History, Health, Child Care Experience, Financial Status/Employment History, Description of Home, Clearance Checks, Summary of Recommendations
Step C
Now is the time to start gathering the items that you
will need for your "Ukrainian Dossier"
Your dossier will include:
1. Home Study
2. Agency license
3. Social workers license
4. Letter from Agency about Social Worker
5. I-171H approval TWO COPIES!
6. Copies of your passports: (On One Paper) THREE COPIES!
7. STATE Police Clearance letters for both parents:

Step D
Fax Documents to Cathy Harris to check for mistakes.
Once we get through the "check", and you have ALL the
documents Ukraine requires. We would then assign you a translator.
At this time, I would send you FOUR more emails:
1) Power of Attorney-
2) Introducing you to your translator-
3) Apostles
Step E
Now you are ready to start the apostle process of your dossier.
First you would have to get County/State stamps. (State Certificates)

After the Secretary of State Apostles the document, the documents would then be sent to Ukraine. (Fed Ex or DHL with tracking). Your translator will give you the address where he/she wants the dossier to be sent. You may also want to include a pre-paid FedEx envelope addressed back to you, so the SDA could send your approval letter faster, rather than using Snail mail (regular slow, Ukrainian mail)
Step F
Now you should be ready to go to Ukraine, once the dossier arrives in Ukraine the translator translate it and turn it into the SDA.
At that time, they have 20 working days to approve your dossier and
register you as an adoptive parent. Once the dossier is registered, they usually give your translator (Power of attorney) your appointment date.
After you know your appointment date, then you could buy airline tickets.
Once you get this clearance you are ready to move onto
Step G
which means .................. GO to Ukraine.

Back Story.

It was the best of times, it was the stressed of times.....
In October of 2007, was a crazy time for us.... I was a few months in to my first year teaching. It was a stressful, yet exciting time for me! I lucked out and got a position that I love, in a district that I currently live in, I grew up in it, and it has reputation for being exclusive. And although it was a lot of stressful hands on learning, I was really finding that I loved my new career.
We started house hunting. Which was slightly stressful, but Thomas and I found one we fell in love with. It was two stories (just like T wanted), it had a adorable front porch, in a good neighborhood (just like I wanted) and it was close to family. Really close to family. We ended up closing that October!
In October we also headed on a European vacation! Where we were able to celebrate our 7 year dating anniversary in Paris. It was an amazing time in our lives. Everything was falling into place.
As if all that excitement wasn't enough, we decided it was the perfect time to grow our happy marriage into a happy family. I had always said that I wanted to start having kids after being married for 5 years. And since I got married when I was 20, that seemed to be very doable.

Plus the idea of starting to try in Europe was super appealing....so we did!
For the first couple months of TTC, it was super relaxed. I took vitamins and would check the calendar for when I would be most fertile, but with the commotion of the new job and new house, baby making was in the back of my mind.

Until right after Valentines Day, I started complaining to my mother how tired I was. I was just exhausted all the time. And she (not knowing that we were trying) asked if I could be pregnant....I ran out...took the test....and wouldn't you know it I was! So excited we went out to dinner with my whole family to celebrate the good news. And went to Barnes and Nobles and bought them out of baby books. The following week I made a doctors appointment. I remember it was our Presidents Day in service day. I was dying to get out of there!!! Thomas met me up at the Doctors office and we anxiously awaited. I took a urine test at the doctors office, and we waited for the results full of excitement. I remember us laughing and talking in the waiting room, thinking we were probably the happiest couple on earth, or at least in the second floor waiting room.
Finally the nurse called us back. She sat us down at a little table, and said "you're NOT pregnant". The news caught me so off guard, and I began to let out uncontrollable sobs, and explained that I had taken 5 pregnancy tests at home and the were all positive plus I was super late on my period. She said that those test are normally more accurate than the doctors urine test, and I should have a blood test done. So I went down and we waited but our good mood was gone. The waiting room wasn't half as fun. The following day, I had an meeting with the head chair of the Graduate program I wanted admission to. I looked like hell on earth. I still felt preggers, nauseous, tired, cranky, and now add weepy to that list. I had made the appointment weeks ago and I didn't want to cancel, so I went anyway. About an hour before I was supposed to meet up with her, I started having terrible cramps. It was horrible, then I started bleeding. About 20 minutes after that the Doctor's office called me "Congratulations, You're Pregnant" To which I snapped back "What! I just started my period!" (later I felt sorry for that nurse, I'm sure she has to deal with hormonal maniacs all day!) Then I had to go to have blood tests done until my hormone levels went to below 10. So that ended my first pregnancy. I didn’t become pregnant again until that November, I unfortunately lost the baby the day after Christmas (the day after telling my entire family as well). The ER doctor discovered I was a negative blood type. Which can cause problems when trying to get pregnant. It was an easy fix to just get a shot. But after months with no luck (they want you to wait until 3 miscarriages or 12 months between pregnancies to be classified infertile, I begged my OBGYN to send me earlier) we were finally sent to a specialists.
After many, many, many rounds of tests it was discovered that I had a septate uterus. Which was lucky because it only took two surgeries to correct. So after I was cleared to start baby making, the doctor suggested we go through a round of injectables. This process was expensive and intense. I was just convinced it would work! The surgery should have fixed my problem, I had follicles, I had been pregnant I was just sure it would work. Sadly it didn’t. I was heart broken. After taking a couple months off to save up we decided to try injectables and an IUI (intrauterine insemination). Another intense and expensive procedure. But we decided we would try it during May.

That May cycle with IUI and injectables worked! We got our BFP on May 23rd. I can’t remember a time when I’ve felt that happy. We told a few of our family and close friends. But unfortunately, as it had happened so many times before, when I went in for my beta, my levels hadn’t doubled. I miscarried that June.
Thomas and I made the decision to switch doctors. The fertility clinic we were using, you spent more time with the nurses than the doctors, we wanted to find a doctor with a smaller practice. A friend who had similar issues recommended me to Dr. Roach. Thomas and I both LOVED her. She was very detailed. And spent a lot of time with us. Plus I really liked the fact that she was a woman.
That August we tried a Clomid IUI, but it didn’t work. In September some soul searching and research, Thomas and I decided to try naturally and start saving up IVF hopefully in January.
That December, I took a home pregnancy test and got a positive. I couldn’t believe it! The month before we are suppose to start treatment! Sadly I miscarried for a fourth time. I was heartbroken.
We did another IUI in January with injectable blood thinners. The doctor didn’t recommend an IVF anymore because I got pregnant, and would get as far along as I would with the treatment.   Everything looked really good, and I was suppose to have my blood work done on Friday. But because of an ice storm everything was closed. So I took an HPT, which came back negative and I didn't really "feel" pregnant. So I didn't push it with the doctor and quit taking my estrogen patches and progesterone. And I went in on Monday afternoon for my follow up blood work. After a bit of a meltdown.
The doctor’s office called me the following Wednesday. I was pregnant, so I started the heparin then, but it was too late. My numbers dropped. I feel so stupid for not double testing.
After my fifth miscarriage and lots of soul searching, Thomas and I decided to try one more iui (since we had some meds left over and our doctor offered to donate most of the rest that we needed). We had decided this would be our last try.
We had some things fall into place, and were really feeling drawn to the idea of adoption. It was more important to us to have a family than a child that was biologically ours. So we were going to move on to adoption.
That August when we had wanted to do our final iui with the left over meds and the donated meds. My period was a few days late, I tested and it came up positive. I went in for blood work, and the numbers were really low and a had my period, so the doctor figured I would miscarry and then we could try the iui. I went in a week later and my numbers doubled correctly. The day before my ultrasound my numbers started slowing down,and the ultrasound showed that my uterus was empty. The doctor sent me to the hospital across the street to get a Methetraxate shot which should dissolve the pregnancy. Thomas and I waited for 4 hours to get the shot. Luckily we were in the room for Chemo patients, so it was very comfortable and I was glad to have Thomas there with me. I got the shot then headed home.
The following day I felt bad, I thought it was due to the shot. I went home right after work and went to bed, Thomas and I agreed after our long day of waiting on Monday we wanted a early night, but by 9 o’clock my cramping had gotten really bad, I could barely walk. Then I started throwing up uncontrollably, we headed out for the emergency room. I was scared because I know ectopic pregnancies can be fatal when they cause internal bleeding. Thomas made record time to the emergency room. They got me in and put me on some morphine, I was pretty agreeable after that. Poor Thomas he was a wreck! The ER doctor called the on call OBGYN they both felt it needed to be removed surgically. I’m glad they did I had lost a lot of blood, but unfortunately my right fallopian tube was unsalvageable. So after two nights stay in the hospital and a week of bed rest I was back to my old self again.
So after our sixth pregnancy landed me in the ER, Thomas and I decided it was time to grow our family through adoption. And we haven’t been happier since!

Thomas and I celebrated our 11 dating anniversary by upgrading my camera!
My Olympus Pen that Thomas had bought me for our 7 year wedding anniversary, met an untimely death while on the way to Fayetteville last weekend. It was sitting on the center console of Thomas truck, when a rogue squirrel dashed in the road. Thomas slammed on the breaks. The squirrel was saved, sadly the camera didn't fare so well! I’m just glad the furry little guy is ok….and that we had insurance!
I decided I wanted to move into the world of DSLR cameras, so I bought a Canon Rebel. I was instantly happy with the results!

So after a quick trip to best buy we headed up to the Barndo for some R&R and to celebrate Dad’s bday.
I thought Buttons looked so precious when she took a break from barking to take a nap in her laundry basket. Or as we like to call it…the BCU(Buttons Containment Unit). And Nitto with her dirty puppy breath!

Thomas’ awesome boss let him off at 3 o’clock so we could all go to the hide out (aka Barndo) so as soon as we both got off work we hit the road. I just love it out there.

We made the journey out to the folks remolded barndo. It was AMAZING! It was beautifully done. Modern but homey. We went into Round Top to look at their antiques, (any excuse to wear my boots) but I’m not much of an antiquer to be quite honest. I enjoyed just hanging out in the country, so nice. look forward to spending many more relaxing weekends out there!

That evening we picked up Soraya and headed downtown to Susan and Evans Wedding. She looked gorgeous! Her parents house was beautiful, it was rain (which is lucky on your wedding day, except her wedding was outside!) But even though we got a little wet, we still had a great time, and I couldn’t be happier for Susan!

Thomas woke up very early on this rainy Sunday morning to go with Robert to the Texans Game, and even though they lost (very close game) and Thomas was soaked, he still had a great time.
Kristen was in for a big treat on her Uncle Matt and family were all in town while she was in Houston visiting. I was so happy for her, but I could have used a little more time with her.
My sweet sweet cousin Amanda is ENGAGED! I’m so happy for her, and I know since she is my Aunt Lollie’s daughter that their shindig will be Martha Stewart-out and amazing! It was great seeing her at Uncle Dave's for a family BBQ and hearing all about her proposal.
Since it was still raining, the guys hung outside under a tent BBQing, it was pretty funny. No one complained about the rain, we were all happy to see it.

Thomas left town for the next three day for a meetings in St. Louis. I spent the days at my parents house. It was fun, just like old times. Although I missed my dear husband terribly!
His flight was right during the Texans vs Saints game. It was an intense game, and I was sorry he had to miss it!

The Thursday after he returned we finally got a little rain. Which make people drive like idiots, and when I say people I mean me.

I worked late, trying to avoid the storm, and when I was less than a mile from my house I rear ended the truck in front of me! The light was green, but everyone stopped, I didn’t notice that, hit the gas, and BAM! We got out to look at the damage,and the other guys car looked fine I hit his hitch. When I saw the damage I did to T’s truck, I started crying. The guy I hit felt bad for me. I just felt so guilty that I damaged the Tahoe, Thomas loves his truck! After both my Dad and Thomas met me at the scene of the crash, (turned out the guy I hit lives in my neighborhood) I started to feel better. Then we switched information and we went on our way to Family Night at Fat Mikes. What a crazy day!

I went out with some friends from work for Susan’s Bachelorette Party. We had dinner at a restaurant called Beavers (there vegetable succotash was yummy!) Then we loaded up in a limo and headed to the flying saucer and howl at the moon! It was a great girls night!

Thomas and I spent the majority of the day working around the house, but we did manage to take a break to sit on the porch and enjoy the RAIN! We have been experiencing a terrible drought here, so even though the rain storm only lasted 30 minutes, it was heavenly!

That night we headed to Giannas to celebrate Grandma and Mom’s birthday! It was delish as usual!

I saw this recipe on Hungry Girl. I love it because you use a can of diet soda instead of the eggs and milk. Just One Box Cake (I chose Devil’s Food) One Can of Diet Soda (I chose Cherry Coke Zero) mix, follow box directions for baking and presto chango a slightly lighter sweet treat!

We met up with the Powell’s after work for some Wacky Mongolian. It was delish and then we walked around vintage park. It was very lively at night, The atmosphere there was lively. Bands playing, people dancing, fountains, and the weather was lovely. It was great catching up with Brent and Amy all about their new jobs as well.

Saturday September 10th, 2011
That morning Joanna and I headed downtown to a Brunch Cooking Class. We had a really good time and the food was awesome. We made Juevos Rancheros, Western Omelet, Biscuits and Gravy and amazing Chocolate Waffles with Peanut Butter Crème sauce! It was yummy.

Afterwards Thomas and I spent Saturday window shopping. And we even got matching scents at Bath and Body Works. The name was Twilight Woods, we loved it, although Thomas feels a little silly wearing a twilight scent (it is in no relation to the movie).

I started off the morning by making Thomas a first day of Texan’s Regular Season Western Omelet, we headed to Academy where Thomas got a Jersey (which he looks way handsome in!) then the Texans killed the Colts! We ended the day with an early dinner with my family at Jason’s Deli and a trip to Barnes and Nobles.

My folks were gone over the weekend to New York for a “cousins reunion”, so we spent the weekend going out to dinner with friends, lounging around, and spending time with Jeff. On Friday we ate at Los Generales with Paul and Lindsay, it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped, but good none the less. Then Saturday we met up with Adam and Kayla to go to the Olive Garden, very yummy! Plus I enjoyed hearing all about their cruise. I’m having some severe cruise envy! There might be one in the Oakes’ future! Sunday we had Jeff over and grilled out. Thomas cooked a ton of veggies. He even grilled tofu for me, my favorite was the teriyaki! Yum! And Nitto got a new bunny! Which she carries with her everywhere.

After spending most the day in bed, I got up to cook dinner with Thomas. A blog I follow and adore has become a new cooking show on the food network Confessions of a Pioneer Woman. So after watching her first episode, Thomas and I decided to cook the meal! We had Jeff over for dinner, took a plate over to Grandma’s and still had a ton left over! Then Thomas put on the Texans game(which they clobbered SFO 30-7). It doesn’t get more southern that that, chicken fried steak and football!

Marinated Tomato Salad with Herbs

Ingredients

6 to 8 ripe tomatoes
4 green onions
1 cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 to 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Handful fresh parsley leaves, lightly chopped
12 fresh basil leaves, chiffonade

Directions
Cut the tomatoes into 4 wedges, then cut the wedges in half and add to a bowl. Lop off the tops of the green onions, then slice the white and mostly light green parts really thin. Add to the tomatoes.

Add the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, dash of salt and pepper to a jar. Screw on the lid and shake to combine. Pour the dressing over the tomatoes and toss.

Chicken Fried Steak

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups whole milk
2 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons seasoned salt
Freshly ground black pepper
3/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 pounds cube steak (tenderized round steak that's been extra tenderized) Or a Veggie Burger if your so inclined.
Kosher salt
1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
1 tablespoon butter

Directions
Begin with setting up an assembly line of dishes. Mix the milk with the eggs in one; the flour mixed with the seasoned salt, 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper, paprika and cayenne in another; and the meat in a third. Then have one clean plate at the end to receive the breaded meat.

Work with one piece of meat at a time. Sprinkle both sides with kosher salt and black pepper, then place it in the flour mixture. Turn to coat. Place the meat into the milk/egg mixture, turning to coat. Finally, place it back in the flour and turn to coat (dry mixture/wet mixture/dry mixture). Place the breaded meat on the clean plate, then repeat with the remaining meat.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter. Drop in a few sprinkles of flour to make sure it's sufficiently hot. When the butter sizzles immediately, you know it's ready. (It should not brown right away, if it does, the fire is too hot.) Cook the meat, 3 pieces at a time, until the edges start to look golden brown, about 2 minutes each side. Remove the meat to a paper towel-lined plate and keep them warm by covering lightly with another plate or a sheet of foil. Repeat until all the meat is cooked.

Chicken Fried Veggie Burger. YUM!

Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

2 sticks butter, softened, plus more for pan
5 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes
One 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 to 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Generously butter a 4-quart baking dish.

Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks. Bring a large pot of water to a simmer and add the potatoes. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, 20 to 25 minutes.

Drain the potatoes in a large colander. Place them back into the dry pot and put the pot on the stove. Mash the potatoes over low heat, allowing all the steam to escape before adding in all the other ingredients.

Turn off the heat and add 1 1/2 sticks butter, the cream cheese, heavy cream, seasoned salt, kosher salt and pepper. Mash to combine.

Spread the potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Throw pats of the remaining butter over the top of the potatoes and bake until the butter is melted and the potatoes are warmed through, 20 to 30 minutes.

My husband rocks because he is my best friend and he is always willing to do silly things with me. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, I was spending time in my bed watching Parent Trap, I asked Thomas to come snuggle with me. He did after a little complaining about my movie selection. Eventually I wanted to go downstairs and get a snack, I told Thomas he could go back and play his game. He then said “Nah, I’ll stay up here with you, I’ve got to see what these girls are up too.” He just cracks me up! My childhood self would be so happy with the man I married.

Sunday August 7th, 2011 Being the nerds we are, Jeff, Carl, Kristen, Thomas and I all traveled downtown to the health museum to their Star Wars Exhibit. The exhibit had a lot of different props from the movie! There was even a replica of the Millennium Falcon Afterwards we had lunch at Niko Nikos. It was a perfect end to a perfect weekend.

This last one is my favorite of all of us on the bridge of the Millennium Falcon. Awesome.

Hat’s Off to the Graduate!

August 6th, 2011 Today was the day I had been dreaming about for two years. I loved getting to wear my Master’s Hood. The ceremony was relatively quick, only 1.5 hours. I loved the flowers I got as well

Afterwards we had the party Open House style. We had a great turnout. To me the party was perfect. I was surrounded by people I love and enjoying my accomplishment. It was the perfect day.

Friday August 5th, 2011 I spent a good portion of my week getting ready for the graduation. I was so lucky to have Kristen to come help!
I really only wanted two things, a decorated table and a photo booth to take pictures in. I wanted it to support the theme of HATS OFF TO THE GRADUATE, so I picked up some crazy hats(although most of them were borrowed)

Also I made this Amaretto Slush. It was AMAZING and it went great with my theme colors (orange and teal/blue).

Amaretto Slush

1-2 liters 7-up
1- 48 oz can Pineapple Juice
1- small can of crushed pineapple
1 8oz can frozen Orange juice concentrate
1 large jar (juice reserved) Cherry halves
2-3 cups Amaretto

Mix all ingredients in 1 gallon ice cream container and freeze overnight. Before serving, break up with large fork, add cherry juice, and serve in punch bowl

Here is a little dinner treat. Little Mini-Lasagnas! They are great to reheat and eat.

Cupcake Lasagna

Mozzarella
Ricotta
Parmesan cheese
marinara sauce
meat (if you so desire)
wonton/gyoza wrappers

Wipe tin with olive oil place the wrapper. Then layer ingredients as you see fit. I used to wonton wrappers each. (I think they come about better if you fold the wonton wrappers down.) Then cook at 375 for 20 min.

Cousin Time

I am soaking up my time with Kristen this summer before she heads off to college in the fall. It has been a blasty blast! Pictured below is a drink buddy from Sonic that Kristen introduced me to, it totally makes me smile. It looks like a blue Nitto.

We let Alana in on the fun. She came and watched Pretty Little Liars (like Kristen and I do every Tuesday) and spent the night. I was so thankful Kristen was there, I didn’t realize that when you make sloppy joes with meat, you have to buy the meat separate. The can was very misleading. And I haven’t cooked hamburger meat in forever! Thank goodness Kristen had it covered! After the show I convinced Alana to go to bed.

I know Alana isn’t a morning, so I was a little concerned about waking her in the am, but as soon as T&I woke up we heard a little knock at our door. It was Alana and she was ready to go. So Alana and I had breakfast at my moms, then picked up Kristen and headed to Splashtown. We had a great time. After a short stop to play in a fire hydrant (which might have been the highlight of Alana’s week!), we went out for a late lunch and then hung around the house for a little while for some crazy manicures by Kristen before I took Alana back home. What a perfect summer day!

Lunch for Thomas

I saw these at the Dollar Spot at Target and had to get them for sweet hubby to take his sandwich's in for lunch!

When I saw this recipe on eating well it made me think of Thomas. He loves artichokes and tuna, so to spice up his lunch I made this.
Artichoke and Ripe Olive Tuna Salad

1 12-ounce can (or two 6-ounce cans) chunk light tuna, drained and flaked (see Note)
1 cup chopped canned artichoke hearts
1/2 cup chopped olives
1/3 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano, or 1/2 teaspoon dried (I used fresh from our garden)

Then you just combine it in a bowl. Combine tuna, artichokes, olives, mayonnaise, lemon juice and oregano in a medium bowl.Thomas really liked it!

Middle of the week camping trip

I went with some work friends to float the river and go camping. The first night we set up camp, went for a dip in the river, and then ate dinner at the Gristmill. The following day we went and floated the Guadalupe. It took us 4 1/2 hours to go one mile(and that is with us getting out and pushing). The water was super low. My favorite part was after our float, we hung out in the waterfalls. The rushing water was so relaxing and refreshing, I didn’t want to leave. The next morning we packed up and headed out. It was a fun weekend packed with time in the outdoors and lots of girl talk!

Harry Potter Weekend

Carl, Rebecca, Kristen, Jeff, Thomas and I and watched every Harry Potter. That’s right all 8 movies. We spent a lot of quality time on the couch. We did manage to go to the Whistle Stop tea room with grandma and BJs brewery with the family.

Heather’s wedding was one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve attended! She looked amazing (even through her tears, I love my sensitive twinkie). And the venues she picked were amazing. First there was a huge catholic church, the stained glass windows and little Irish preacher were so perfect. Then her reception was held on the roof of a downtown hotel over looking the city of Atlanta. It was breathtaking! Then we danced the night away! (Well for me dancing was jumping up and down for a few hours!) My only regret was not spending more time with my darling hubby. We were all dressed up and I didn’t get any good shots of us. Nor did we dance. The music was a little fast for us, what can I say, the Texas girl in me loves to two step! Other than that it was the perfect reception. And I think everyone in our family will be talking about it for a long time! I did snap a ton of photos at the reception!

Rehearsal and Bier Garden

Friday July 8th, 2011 We started off the day going to see Grandpa Tom. Then we rushed downtown to get pick up Thomas’ tux and meet my parents. I was dying to see the family! But the Tux took a long time(they ordered the wrong shoes) and I forgot how horrible Atlanta driving is. We missed lunch with the family, so we picked up some fast food and scarfed it down, getting to spend a total of 10 minutes with them before it was time to head to the rehearsal. The rehearsal went perfectly. The Rehearsal dinner was held at a brewery not too far from the church. Amazingly the place were Thomas needed to get his shoes from was across the street.

Dinner was delish, and the gifts we got were awesome! Heiko gave Thomas (an usher) cuff links and a nice duffle bag. I loved my bridal jewelry and Vera Bradley bag Heather picked out for me.

Grandma, Thomas and I meet up with the rest of the family at the Bier garden with the family. I was so glad we did! It was great seeing the whole family together, and the restaurant was ADORABLE. With a big patio with white lights and very themey.

Red Sky and Tilted Kilt

Thursday July 7th, 2011 For Heather’s Last Hurrah we went to a piano bar in Marietta. Thomas came and dropped me off then went to the Tilted Kilt with his cousin Dave. This worked out so well since Dave lived close by and gave Thomas something to do while I was at the party. The Martini’s were yummy and was Heather sung to on the piano. Perfect.

Afterwards Aunt Gail and Heather dropped me off at the Tilted Kilt. But not before getting lost and driving by the Big Chicken (an Atlanta landmark) Thomas and I hung out with Dave and closed the Tilted Kilt down. It was a fun night!
